A Smashing Good Time

MASON CITY — There was one unstoppable car-squashing tank. “It was pretty nice when that back window exploded,” said Daniel Schnobelen, 15, a Ventura High School student on a field trip with Garner-Hayfield High School’s shop class, after the tank mashed cars in Huber’s back lot.

“I didn’t think it would flatten em that much,” said Darcie Gayken, welding and agriculture instructor at Lake Mills High. She brought 22 students along on the field trip.

The Abbott tank, operated by Tony Borglum of Drive A Tank Inc. in Waseca, Minn., easily crushed two cars, popping out window glass and crunching metal.

Borglum got a nice round of applause from the big crowd at Huber, the seller of welding equipment, oxygen and other industrial supplies which is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

“It’s way different than a monster truck,” he said. “This is kind of a ‘movie’ thing. I think that’s what stuns people.” Read more here...
